The American University in Cairo was founded in 1919 by Americans devoted to education and community service in the Middle East. Today, AUC is the region’s premier English language university — an essential contributor to the social, political and cultural life of the Arab world. It also serves as a crossroads for the world’s cultures: a vital, vibrant forum for reasoned argument, spirited debate and understanding across cultures. AUC is an independent, nonprofit, apolitical, non-sectarian and equal-opportunity institution, fully accredited in Egypt and the United States.
The rich diverse environment at our University provides us with excellent conditions for recruiting keen team members to work on the Solar Decathlon competition. The project is run by joint efforts of the Department of Construction and Architectural Engineering and the Slide-s Club. The ‘Sustainable Livable Interactive Design’ club gives the team an additional valuable platform to inform, recruit and educate all those wishing to join the Solar Decathlon project. Specialization and interdisciplinary learning are expressed in the composition of the project team that mostly consists of architecture students, but also includes construction, mechanical and electrical engineering students, faculty and volunteers. Working with universities within and outside Egypt, (Cairo University, Bauhaus University Weimar) enterprises (Orascom Industries) and nonprofit organizations (GIZ, iceCairo) allows us to expand our horizons of thinking and spread the Solar Decathlon mission more profoundly.
