Solar Decathlon China (SDC) was introduced to China as an achievement of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues. With the authorization of the U.S. Department of Energy, China Overseas Development Association forms SDC Organizing Committee to hold the competitions in China, supported by related departments, local governments and other major partners. The first & second SDC took place in Datong, Shanxi Province 2013 and Dezhou, Shandong Province in 2018 respectively.
SDC aims to create a workforce development and education program which can provide student architects, engineers, business majors, and communicators the opportunity to cooperate in designing and building sustainable housing projects that can respond to people’s daily realities and regional development.
The first Solar Decathlon China was held in Datong, Shanxi Province in 2013. 37 universities and more than 1,000 college students from 13 countries took part in the whole design and construction. In addition, there were support and participation of more than 30 governmental agencies, more than 200 international institutions and the enterprises in relevant industries, as well as 260,000 visitors.
In 2018, the City of Dezhou in Shandong Province successfully hosted the second SDC event: 19 teams from 34 universities, 370 enterprises and 500,000 visitors.
